SPAN 4190: Literature Review

This literature review focuses on food insecurity faced by the Hispanic population in the United States using the Social-Ecological Model as its primary framework. After an introduction of the Hispanic population in the U.S. and drawing attention to relevance of this health issue, which serves as a threat on its own and as a contributor to other diseases and conditions, I highlight and analyze social determinants of health (SDOH) on multiple levels of the model with special emphasis on the selected population. To end, I include evidence-based recommendations for interventions and programs that address the SDOH and function to reduce the disparities faced. Building off of the skills attained via my HLTH 2400 literature review, this paper allowed me to gain a better understanding of the challenges faced specifically by the Hispanic population in the United States and the cultural factors that also influence health outcomes.

SPAN 4090: The War of the Triple Alliance (Paraguayan War)

This report investigates the Paraguayan War, also known as the War of the Triple Alliance, between Paraguay and the alignment of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay in the late 1800s. In this conflict, not only did Paraguay face defeat, but the country also lost a large percentage of its male population, leading to short- and long-term social effects. While researching this topic I learned how intertwined the development of Latin American countries was during the formative years, not only due to the clashing political views, but also because of the numerous shared borders and the countries’ ability to intervene physically as a consequence of those disagreements with ease. Additionally, I gained an appreciation of investigating how profoundly social shifts in the past can contribute to norms in the present.
